What you are actually choosing between
A conventional antifouling system requires a haul-out and a full repaint at regular intervals for as long as the vessel is in service. A silicone fouling-release system is abraded once, at first application. Every subsequent service is a clean and a single recoat, with no abrasion, which is why the two systems diverge over a ten-year ownership horizon rather than in the first season.
Silicone also carries no biocide and no copper. On an aluminium or steel hull this is a structural consideration rather than an environmental preference: copper is cathodic to aluminium, and in salt water a copper-bearing coating establishes a galvanic cell in which the hull becomes the anode.
